Peptides in the biohacking conversation: what they are, and where UK regulation stands

"Peptides" has become one of the most talked-about topics in biohacking and performance-optimisation communities. The term covers an enormous range of compounds, and the online conversation frequently blurs the line between well-established, legal ingredients and compounds that are not legal to sell or supply for human use in the UK. As a UK manufacturer, we think the responsible thing is to explain that distinction clearly.
What a peptide actually is
A peptide is simply a short chain of amino acids, the same building blocks that make up proteins. Peptides occur naturally throughout the body and in food. The word itself tells you nothing about whether a given compound is safe, effective, legal or appropriate for consumption. That depends entirely on the specific molecule and how it is regulated.
The categories people are actually discussing
Food-derived and established supplement peptides
This includes collagen peptides, creatine (technically not a peptide but often grouped in these conversations), and various protein-derived bioactive peptides. These are legal, well-characterised food supplement ingredients in the UK.
Cosmetic peptides
A large category used in topical skincare (for example, signal peptides in serums). These are regulated as cosmetics, applied to the skin rather than ingested, and are a legitimate, established area.
Therapeutic and "research" peptides
This is where most of the biohacking hype and most of the risk sits. Compounds frequently discussed in online communities — such as BPC-157, TB-500, and growth-hormone secretagogues like the various "-morelin" compounds — fall into this group. This is the critical point for UK readers: these are not authorised dietary supplement ingredients. They are either unlicensed medicines, compounds sold only as "research chemicals not for human consumption," or substances that sit outside the food supplement framework entirely.
Where UK regulation stands
In the UK, ingestible products are broadly split between food/food supplements, regulated under food law, and medicines, regulated by the MHRA. A supplement ingredient must have an appropriate history of safe food use and cannot be marketed with medicinal claims. Many of the therapeutic peptides discussed in biohacking circles do not meet the criteria to be sold as food supplements, and marketing them for human consumption or making health claims about them can place a product firmly in medicines territory, which requires MHRA authorisation.
Selling "research chemical" peptides labelled "not for human consumption" while implying human use is a well-known grey-market practice and one that carries real legal and safety risk. Products of this kind are outside the quality and safety controls that apply to regulated supplements and medicines, and purity, dosing and contamination cannot be assumed.
Why this matters for anyone in the space
For consumers, the practical takeaway is that "peptide" is not a category you can evaluate as a whole. Collagen in a food supplement and an injectable research peptide ordered online are not comparable in evidence, legality or safety. For brands and businesses, the takeaway is that this is a heavily regulated area where getting the classification wrong has consequences, and where credibility comes from being accurate about what can and cannot legally be offered.
